Questions to ask yourself about your home:
- Do you leave the doors to your home, shed or garage unlocked?
- Do you have peepholes in the entrance door?
- Do you have a security chain on your entrance door?
- Do you have deadbolts on your entrance door?
- Do you still have the factory locks on your shed/garage doors?
- Do you leave your windows open at night or when no one is home?
- Do you have secondary locks on your windows?
- Have you had your locks changed since you moved home?
- Do you have a security alarm? Is it monitored?
- Do you have security bolts fitted to your double entry door or sliding doors?
- Do you have sensor lights around your home?
- Do you have locks on your gates?
- Do you have bushes, trees, etc covering your windows and doors?
- You should get all your locks changed/rekeyed when moving to a new home as you do not know who may have a key or how many keys are out there.
- You should keep your doors locked even when in your home.
- You should keep your security chain in place.
- You should keep your windows locked even when they are open.
- You should keep your security bolts locked to give added protection.
- You should also have secondary locks on your shed/garage doors.
When you go on holiday:
- You should stop deliveries.
- You should let a neighbour know you are going away so they can keep an eye on your home.
- You should lock and remove the keys from all windows and doors.
- You should leave a light on or have lights on a timer in certain rooms to give the impression that someone is home.
- You should get a friend or neighbour to collect your mail from the mail box.
- You should tidy away all toys, tools or objects that could assist in gaining entry to your home.
- You should lock your side gates.
- You should set you house alarm.
- You should take or hide all spare keys for your home, shed, garage or cars.
- You should never leave cash or valuables on display, put them in the safe.
